John 13:12-17
When Jesus had washed their feet and put on his outer clothing, he reclined again and said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you? You call me Teacher and Lord — and you are speaking rightly, since that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done for you.
“Truly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
I’ve been familiar with these words of Jesus for years. The story of Jesus washing feet is such a great picture of humble service. But it’s this last verse that always gets me. “If you know these things, you are blessed (or happy) if you do them.” There is something special about simple service and God taught me that once again on my trip to Guyana with Medical Missions Outreach.
Medical Missions Outreach partners with churches and missionaries around the world to help meet physical needs and share the good news of Jesus. On this particular trip we were able to work with the Ministry of Health in Guyana to set up a dental and optical clinic at a local church in a village outside the city of Georgetown. We were thankful to be able to serve hundreds of Guyanese people and see over 100 people place their faith in Jesus.
Each day at the optical clinic people would come and have their eye-sight evaluated. We would then match them up with a pair of donated glasses that would best meet their needs. My role in the clinic was pretty straightforward. I would have the person try several different pairs of glasses to improve their vision as much as possible. Nothing beats watching people’s response to being able to see, often for the first time in years. I loved getting to sit down with individuals, hear their stories, then helping them see. Serving was such a privilege and the words of Jesus came alive in my heart person after person.
One of the highlights for me was getting to preach in the Sunday evening service. I was pretty nervous because it’s been a few months since I preached and it was my first time preaching in a different country. But I am thankful that our King Jesus transcends cultural differences. I was able to share from Philippians 2:5-11 and I was reminded what a privilege it is to preach and teach God’s Word and that there is no one greater than our King. It was a special evening and I’m thankful I was able to share it with some dears friends and the body of Christ.
Guyana is a beautiful and diverse country. It didn’t take me long to fall in love with the rainforest and the local wildlife. Each night we would end the day at the host pastor’s home and the sound of nature was one of my favorite parts. (Not to mention the caiman alligator that lived in the creek behind his house.) As we would drive along the Demerara River each evening and watch the sun set, I was reminded how great our God is. Serving him through serving others is a privilege.
I would also like to say thank you to everyone who supported me and made it possible for me to go on this trip!
